Route 511 runs through rural Ohio where I grew up. It cuts through flat fields, past abandoned Victorian houses and unused railroad tracks. Even as a toddler, the austerity of this desolate road filled me a clashing sense of wonder and unease.
I created the enameled images in these earrings by "painting" with powdered glass on thin steel using tiny brushes and various scraping tools. I fired the design with a torch to fuse the glass to the metal. One of the earrings features an original illustration of phone poles along the road, and the other is a continuation of the scene with an empty horizon.
I created the sterling silver ear wires by hand as well, using tools to form them into delicate circular closures and hammering them lightly to help them hold their minimal shape. These earrings are delicate in proportion and feather-light. They are approximately .5" wide and 1.75" long including the ear wire.
