Pendant necklace. Sterling silver, steel.
I often explore a recurring theme of rural landscapes, electric lines, and telephone poles in my work.
This particular piece is inspired by a strange black and white photo of an Ohio roadside in my grandmother's photo album. The blurry snapshot was decorously situated with gold corner tabs among wedding photos and formal portraits of corsetted ancestors. Why? Surely the scene was important to my late grandmother, but its significance was now lost. The snapshot had no caption, date, or explanation – I thought of how it is sad that our most treasured moments are often the most insignificant and undocumented – and they disappear when we are gone.
In this particular piece, I wanted to capture an unsettled sense of melancholy. I illlustrated an Ohio roadside with black china paint on enameled steel to depict low clouds looming on the horizon, and a series of phone poles, set askew, receding into the distance.
I liked the idea of this insignificant image preserved in precious metal, much as my grandmother had preserved the photo in her album. So I chose to bezel set the enamel in a stepped frame of brushed sterling silver, reminiscent of simple 1940s industrial design.
On the back, I extracted and etched a strange line of text from my late grandmother's insurance ID card which reads, "sickness causing absence" and "effective 1945." The bezel style, combined with the form letter-style design of the back, gives this piece a more minimal look than many of my other works; I wanted it to have a detached and cold feeling, reflective of my mood at the time.

𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 Brooch in progress. Vitreous enamel; hand painted, torch fired. This is one of a series of art jewelry pieces incorporating dead, flightless, and falling birds. I designed these pieces to provoke a strong sense of compassion and charity; they are my response to a pervasive callousness, a call for empathy for others.
