The title of this piece is inspired by a poem of the same title by William Cullen Bryant. It was written in the mid 1800s, the same era when memento mori jewelry was at its most popular

⁣So live, that when thy summons comes to join ⁣⁣
⁣⁣The innumerable caravan, which moves ⁣⁣
⁣⁣To that mysterious realm, where each shall take ⁣⁣
⁣⁣His chamber in the silent halls of death, ⁣⁣
⁣⁣Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night, ⁣⁣
⁣⁣Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed ⁣⁣
⁣⁣By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, ⁣⁣
⁣⁣Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch ⁣⁣
⁣⁣About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣– William Cullen Bryant⁣⁣⁣
Memento mori (“remember death”) jewelry of the 1800s was designed to remind us to "live righteously" – or in today's thinking, “be present in the moment.” This collection of memento mori pieces reflects the historical significance and gravity of our times. I aim to bring a sense of empathy and context to the work through images and symbols that evoke both pity and dread, that are reminiscent of the hardships and perspectives of generations before and centuries past.⁣⁣
